Campus Mailing Information
Since 1851, the University of Notre Dame has had it's own post office, seperate from the neighboring town of South Bend, IN. This is an important and unique part of Notre Dame's history, but it can sometimes lead to confusion as well.
This web page is meant to provide some basic information to assist campus departments trying to receive mail and off-campus parties trying to mail to campus. This information was compiled in August 2017 in collaboration with the Notre Dame Mail Distribution office and the United States Postal Service Postmaster for Notre Dame, IN. It will be updated periodically as appropriate but for specific concerns we recommend you contact those offices directly.
Unique Aspects of Campus Mail
- Campus mailing addresses are a combination of room number and building name, it is acceptable to add department name, but this must be directly below name and above building name. Street names are not typically used. For example, if you were sending mail to someone in the Chemistry department, in Suite 305 on the third floor of McCourtney Hall, the address would be written as follows:
305 McCourtney Hall
Notre Dame, IN 46556
- Many Notre Dame rooms and workstations are labeled with alpha-numeric numbers such as 305A, 305B, etc. Please note that USPS systems do not recognize the alpha component of such addresses. Continuing from the example above, Jane Doe might also be in Suite 305 at McCourtney Hall but located specifically at a workstation numbered 305A. In this case, Jane Doe's valid USPS address would still simply be 305 McCourtney Hall. Please keep this in mind when establishing published mailing addresses or trying to use web-based shipping software to send items to campus.
- Campus mail is all delivered to a central receiving location, then sorted and distributed to it's final location. If you are using a tracking service for a letter or package, it may indicate "delivered" when the mail reaches the central receiving location.
- Many buildings on campus have their own unique "Zip 4" information, please contact the USPS Postmaster.
Important Information for Campus Departments
- When creating business cards, letterheads, websites and other materials that contain campus mailing information for your department, please consider including the "Zip +4" as part of your address information if applicable. This will ensure the timely and accurate delivery of your incoming mail.
- Many Notre Dame rooms and workstations are labeled with alpha-numeric numbers such as 305A, 305B, etc. Please note that USPS systems do not recognize the alpha component of such addresses. Please keep this in mind when establishing published mailing addresses. You can simply trim the alpha from the address.
- If you have special needs for campus mail or questions about deliveries or addresses, please contact the USPS Postmaster or Notre Dame Mail Distribution.
Important Information for Off-Campus Parties
- When ordering items online, or working with a delivery company to send items to campus, please note that most vendors use the USPS database as their source for address information. These vendor systems often require an exact match in order to approve an order.
- The names of campus buildings in the USPS database do not always match the commonly understood names for a given building. If you are having trouble placing an online order or schedullng a delivery, please refer to the Building Mailing Address Guide. This was developed in collaboration with the USPS Postmaster and will be updated periodically as appropriate.
